My KINGSTON

My KINGSTON

Style Observer (SO): Tell us a little about Maurice McDonald.

Maurice McDonald (MM): I am from a very peaceful district in Manchester known as Comfort Hall, raised with love, patience and guidance by my grandparents from I was six months. My mother had to seek employment out of parish to support me, as I had an absentee father.

My grandparents taught me the importance of respect and discipline, which has been the bedrock to my success over the years.

I am a very tenacious individual who refuses to quit. I embrace pressure and rise through challenges. When the tough gets going, I get tough! I am totally committed to personal growth and development, which has seen me defying all odds and rise from one subject, to graduating magna cum laude honours (BSc) and also earning an MBA in marketing. Currently, I manage a very profitable branch of one of Jamaica’s leading financial organisations.

As a branch manager, professional speaker and life coach, I am very passionate about empowering others to grow and succeed.

SO: What has your journey to becoming branch manager been like?

MM: My journey to becoming a branch manager has been built on discipline, continuous learning, and resilience. I started with visualising myself in the role before I was promoted. Within six months of being in the industry, I was Sagicor’s rookie of the year, bringing in the most business written as a new advisor. I quickly learned that growth in this field requires developing both skill and character.

Along the way, I faced many challenges that pushed me to improve, and I invested heavily in my development and sharpening my leadership skills. Becoming a branch manager is really the result of consistent effort and a commitment to excellence.

SO: How fulfilling has your career in insurance been?

MM: My career in insurance has been deeply fulfilling with many accolades. My role is not just about selling a product, it is about providing security, creating opportunities, and helping families build a future. Over the years, what has fulfilled me the most is seeing lives change, whether it’s a client gaining financial stability or a team member growing into their own success.

SO: How did you get the name ‘Maurice The Motivator’?

MM: The name came about when I found myself constantly encouraging others to push past their limits and see more for themselves. It really reflects my passion for helping others believe in themselves and take action towards acheiving their best selves.

SO: Were you able to fix a few things in Jamaica, what would they be?

MM: Health & Fitness

I’d encourage a stronger focus on fitness and health, as these are very important pillars to improve overall quality of life, energy, and productivity.

Financial literacy

I’d improve financial literacy especially to the younger generation on effective money management, to avoid debt traps, and build long-term wealth.

Motivation/mindset

Helping people believe in their potential and take consistent action toward better opportunities.

SO: What’s your favourite thing to do when in Kingston?

MM: Outside of work, I like taking time to unwind, whether that’s good food, music, or just being in a relaxed environment that lets me reset and reflect.

SO: What are you drinking?

MM: Appleton Estate 8 Year Old Reserve with cranberry

SO: What are you listening to as you drive from home to your office at New Brunswick Village?

MM: A motivational speaker or in total silence to prepare my mind for a successful day.

SO: Share with us a few of your creature comforts.

MM: I enjoy a relaxed environment that helps me stay balanced and focused after a busy day.

I enjoy time in the gym to stay fit and clear my mind, reset, and build discipline.

I also enjoy watching the English Premier League and IPL cricket.

Staying up-to-date with world events from CNN and BBC.

SO: You have developed quite the reputation for your impressive tailoring at both Branch and Corporate Awards. How would you describe your style?

MM: I would describe my style as bold, intentional and fearless! A blazer is always added, whether it’s for work or travel. My style is about maintaining a standard, no matter where I am.

SO: Who’s your preferred fashion designer?

MM: Carlton Brown

SO: Which cologne are you currently splashing?

MM: Tom Ford Noir now and Pegasus Exclusif by Parfums de Marly.

SO: Share with us the title of the last book you read.

MM: Start With Why by Simon Sinek

SO: What’s your personal philosophy?

MM: I am a strong believer in continuous growth, staying disciplined, and always operating with purpose. I also believe that success is not accidental; it’s built through consistency, learning, and how you show up every day matters. I also believe that when God is a part of the journey, anything is possible. I also echo the sentiments of Winston Churchill: ‘Success is not final, failure is not fatal, rather it is the courage to continue that counts’.

Keep pushing and God will keep blessing!
