A national priority
Dear Editor,
Child care and protection must never be seen as the responsibility of a few — it is the duty of us all. Every parent, every educator, every community member, and indeed every citizen has a role to play in safeguarding the well-being of our children.
We must become more vigilant in recognising when children’s rights are being violated. Silence and inaction only create space for harm to continue. Instead, we need a culture of awareness, responsiveness, and accountability in which concerns are raised, support systems are strengthened, and intervention is timely and effective.
Children are the most vulnerable yet most valuable segment of our population. Protecting them is not just a moral obligation, it is a national imperative. When we fail to do so, we are not only putting individual lives at risk, we are undermining the very fabric of our society.
A nation cannot progress if its children are neglected, abused, or left unprotected. Such failures degrade our social structures and hinder our ability to improve our human development outcomes. If we are serious about national growth and global competitiveness, we must invest in creating safe, nurturing environments in which children can thrive.
We must also remember that preparing children for the demands of the 21st century goes beyond academics. It requires emotional security, protection from harm, and the assurance that they are valued and supported. Only then can they develop into productive, responsible adults who will contribute meaningfully to society.
Let us, therefore, commit to a shared vision, one in which every child is protected, every voice is heard, and every community stands as a guardian of its young. The future of our nation depends on it.
