CAMPERDOWN High advanced to the second round of the ISSA Manning Cup with a 2-1 win over Holy Trinity High at Alpha Institute on Tuesday.

Goals by Chadwick Briscoe in the 23rd minute and Captain Ortega Ellis in the 76th propelled Camperdown to their fourth win of the season and consolidated their position at the top of Zone A on 12 points.

Holy Trinity, playing their second game in three days, remained in contention for a top-three finish on seven points in third place with two games remaining.

Greater Portmore moved into second place on 10 points after dismissing Jonathan Grant 2-0, while Bridgport High moved into fourth place on six points with a 2-0 win over Ascot High, who slipped to fifth on four points.

Camperdown started the better of the two teams, but Holy Trinity had the ball in the net in the 19th minute when Christopher Robb scored. However, the effort was ruled offside.

Four minutes later, Briscoe gave Camperdown the lead when his effort squirmed under goalkeeper Kareem Scott.

Camperdown continued to look the better team and doubled their lead in the 76th minute when Ellis headed home.

Holy Trinity pulled a goal back through Keammar Williams, who produced the goal of the game when he rammed a free kick from 30 metres over goalkeeper Tavone Dicks’s head and into the net.

Camperdown High Assistant Coach Collin Wilson said his team performed well enough to secure the three points and is now looking towards the second round.

“We started very flat, because we knew this is a game that we could have won from the first half but, for some reason, we started flat. But the second half, we held our own and came out 2-1 victors,” Wilson said.

“It’s a work in progress from the preseason in the summer. We’ve been working, working, working, and this is what we aim to do, and we are doing that.”

Holy Trinity Head Coach Davion Johnson said his team had hoped to win or take a point from the game.

“For today’s game, we really wanted to try and win this game or even take a point on the road but, unfortunately, it wasn’t our day today,” Johnson said.

“But unfortunately, we just made one little mistake and it cost us that goal. Second half, we were trying to push for a second goal, trying to push for a goal, but they caught us off guard and scored. Eventually, we get to 2-1. We got our chances in the second half to really and truly even try and draw the game or get the win,” Johnson said.

“But we’re looking forward. Our aim is really to make the second round, and we’re still in the running.”

“Depends on how the scoreline goes. We’re still up there. We’re just hoping that some favour is going our way,” Johnson said.
