Frome, Rusea’s on cusp of daCosta Cup 2nd-round progress

Former champions Frome Technical and Rusea’s High are among five teams that could this afternoon secure tickets to the second round of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition.

Frome, Rusea’s and Lacovia High need only a draw to get the automatic berths, while Edwin Allen High and Paul Bogle High both need wins to make progress.

So far Irwin High, St James High, Ferncourt High, Brown’s Town High, Munro College, Knox College, Yallahs High, St Mary High and Titchfield High have booked their places.

Frome lead Zone B with 13 points and will play away to Green Island High, who have won their last three games. Green Island could end with 12 points if they manage to upset the zone leaders at home.

Rusea’s High, also in Zone B, are on 12 points. They are set to play away to Knockalva Technical, who are on 10 points after ending 1-1 against Petersfield High on Wednesday.

Knockalva, who are coached by former Rusea’s High daCosta Cup winning goalkeeper Jackomeno Barrett, are wellplaced to create the biggest upset of the round, as a win would see them take the qualifying spot ahead of Rusea’s.

Second-placed Lacovia High, on 15 points, can join Munro College as the automatic qualifiers from Zone D with a draw against Black River High. The Black River team is still in contention on 12 points, despite back-to-back losses but they face a massive hurdle.

Lacovia High boast a goal-difference of 26 to Black River’s six but any result for Black River would open the door for BB Coke High, who are also on 12 points. BB Coke are to meet Mount St Joseph Catholic who have conceded 47 goals in six losses.

There could be a consolation for the third-place finisher from Zone D as that team could take one of the three best thirdplace spots. Edwin Allen High are expected to advance to the second round along with zone winners Knox College, as they will face Troy High in their Zone F.

If, however, Edwin Allen slip up, Holmwood Technical will be waiting to snatch the second spot as they take on out-of-contention Alston High.

Paul Bogle High, on 10 points, must beat hosts Happy Grove High if they are to leapfrog Morant Bay High who ended their schedule with an upset win over qualifiers Yallahs High.

Yallahs are also set to be in action against Robert Lightbourne High.

On Thursday, Browns Town and St Mary High topped their respective zones after respective victories over Ferncourt High and Titchfield High.

Brown’s Town topped the Zone C points table after beating previous leaders Ferncourt High 5-0 at York Castle High.

The win took Brown’s Town to 16 points, ending Ferncourt High’s perfect win record at five. Both teams had qualified for the second round before the start of the game.

St Mary High ran their perfect record to five-straight wins with a 2-1 triumph over Titchfield High who were dropping points for the first time this season.

Tayshaun Beckford’s goal in time added in the second half decided the game.
