MBU brush aside Cavalier; return to JPL summit

TURNERS, Clarendon — Montego Bay United reclaimed the lead in the Jamaica Premier League after dominating Cavalier 3-1 in their first-round game played at Turners Oval in Clarendon on Sunday.

Despite conceding for the first time this season MBU improved to 13 points — three more than Waterhouse who play tonight — while Cavalier, who were losing for the first time this season, stayed in sixth place on seven points.

Dunbeholden got their first win of the season after four straight losses, edging Molynes United 1-0, while Humble Lion got their second- straight point, holding Chapelton Maroons to a 0-0 draw.

After back-to-back 1-0 wins MBU exploded with three goals — the most they have scored in one game this season — maintaining in the process their unbeaten start to the season.

Deonjay Brown and Dwight Merrick both scored their second goal of the season and Richardo Ramsey scored his first, with Christopher Ainsworth scoring for Cavalier, ending MBU’s run of not conceding a goal at 412 minutes.

Brown was well placed at the far-right post to volley home a cross in the 17th minute and give MBU the lead.

Merrick doubled the lead 20 minutes later with a spectacular left footer from about 27 yards away, beating Cavalier’s goalkeeper Taywaine Lynch at his left post.

Ainsworth was well placed to tap home a cross in the 52nd minute to cut the deficit but Ramsey — who had replaced the injured Jourdain Fletcher and who missed an easy scoring chance just minutes earlier — made the points sure when he wormed his way past two defenders and fired past Lynch in the 80th minute.

At Dunbeholden Sports Complex, Tuwain Merrick scored the hosts’ second goal of the season.

his first, when he finished off a good combination by curling the ball past the Molynes goalkeeper into the far -eft corner in the 66th minute.
