Runaway Star returns in style after 17-month layoff
THE talent that made Runaway Star one of the most talked- about three-year-olds of 2025 resurfaced on Saturday, October 10, 2026, when the chestnut colt made a winning comeback at Caymanas Park.
His ability was evident early. As a three-year-old, Runaway Star won the seven-furlong Prince Consort on April 12, 2025 — a major Classic prep — in just the third start of his career. He was later disqualified and the race awarded to Honour Prince.
He returned on May 4 in the 7½-furlong The Kingston, finishing a cracking second, just half-a-length behind Sensational Soul. Then came the setback. Injuries forced the Northern Giant colt to the sidelines for more than a year and a half, as trainer Jason DaCosta and his connections patiently focused on recovery.
His comeback bid on September 27, 2026, in a fouryear- old non-winners-of-two event over 7½ furlongs, ended abruptly when his jockey fell shortly after the start.
He was given another chance just 13 days later on October 10, in a four-furlong non-winnersof- two contest on the straight course, and this time he made it count.
With Tevin Foster in the irons, Runaway Star broke prominently from an outside draw. Still racing green, he drifted toward the middle of the straight before finding his stride.
Under strong urging from Foster, he pulled clear to win convincingly in 48.1 seconds. Rush of Class, with Dane Dawkins aboard, finished second, while Enthusiastic and Tajay Suckoo were third.
The victory, his second from six career starts, pushes his earnings to just over $2 million and suggests the colt who once looked a Classic contender could yet have a bright future if he stays sound.
