BWA launches video on incest
The Bureau of Women’s Affairs on Tuesday, November 28, launched the video, “Hope Deferred” as part of its public education campaign on incest. The video tells the story of two families from different social backgrounds who share a common problem – incest.
According to Dr Glenda Simms, director of the Bureau of Women’s Affairs the video is an important public education tool and will be made accessible to all parts of Jamaica and to the English speaking CARICOM members.
“It is a film of risk and challenges, we can longer bury this issue under the carpet and we intend to take the film islandwide to highlight the plight of many young girls and boys who are suffering silently in our society today”, she told the large gathering of mainly women who came in support of the initiative.
Endorsing the video, Minister of Tourism and Sport, Portia Simpson-Miller said that incest is one of the syndromes of violence against women, and said that the powerful video should send a strong message to Jamaican men who continue to abuse women and children.
In response to the growing statistics related to the murders of women, rapes, incest and all forms of physical, psychological and social, the Bureau of Women’s Affairs has also launched a serious review of all the pieces of legislation that were designed to bring some level of dignity to all women in Jamaica.
