The Irish have landed
It was bound to happen, the signs became crystal clear for me at least last year when my daughter was given a ‘must have’ gift from her dear aunt a mobile for campus. My look of consternation was met by a quick flick of the wrist as well as a furrowed brow. “It’s de rigueur Sis”. Looking around the city of London every Sloane Ranger wore Burberry, Prada, Dior and a mobile; every car in which I travelled had a minimum of two.
Back in Jamaica, the buzz started over Brunch at Strawberry Hill when the topic of discussion over fresh salmon was how Digicel had poached Cable and Wireless’s number one cellular man. There seemed to be a major hush, not much was heard, activity however, islandwide. And finally last couple of months when more press intercourse was sought, longer dinner meetings and a final frenetic surge to install even more cables.
Finally there’s lights, cameras, action, drum roll, wrap arounds, delivery of digicel mobiles, access to the world without a land phone. Whew! all in one fell swoop. Francois Saint Juste invited us to fete… No corporate launch of this kind has ever been seen this side of the world. It really was all about Mary Mary and Maxi Priest and Beenie Man… Grammy night, Oscar night. Jamaica’s finest came out and hopefully understood that it takes cash to make an event major.
But recovery from all of this was not slow. For by the time I had grasped just how sexy my digicel looked in my pink XOXO handbag my profile posse over a digi lunch started ‘jargoning’ about mobile text. Mobile what?
Well since our dear friend Harry Smith plans to have us change our wardrobes monthly to match the sleek, sleeker, sleekest instruments which he plans to unveil each month, let’s get cracking ladies and ‘jargon mobile’ or rather let’s ‘digi-jargon’.
In text messaging, many words come from shorthand created in e mail, such as FYI for your information, IMO in my opinion, and GAL, get a life. Pretty straight forward but then some shorthand can be ambiguous. LOL can mean both laughing out loud and lots of love but fancy asking somebody out by texting: w%U llk 2go4 a drink? or WAN2TLK. So far so good so here are some more SAM say it again Sam:
