CDA treats foster moms
In recognition of its second National Foster Care Recognition Week (Feb 11-17), the Child Development Agency feted three randomly selected outstanding foster moms with makeovers last week. They were Avis Wilson, Jem James and Lorna Burke.
The objectives of the week are to highlight family-based care as an integral part of the continuum of services offered to children separated from their natural parents; recognise and salute foster parents and their contribution to national development; promote the National Foster Care Programme and encourage greater participation of citizens.
Clothes were provided by Changes Boutique, Mall Plaza; Go West, Village Plaza and Smart Woman, Village Plaza and salon services by Yashay’s Day Spa and Salon.
Avis Wilson
Age: 55
Height: 5’2″
Occupation: Homemaker
Children: Two girls and two boys
Hobbies: Baking, sewing
When Avis Wilson learnt that she was one of three outstanding foster moms selected by the CDA to receive a makeover, she was thrilled. The petite homemaker who hails from Hanover revealed that, for some time now, she had been contemplating straightening her corn rowed hair, which she mostly kept hidden under a black beret.
That was definitely a go-ahead.
The transformation which took place on Tuesday (February 6) was pure magic. This was the awesome rejuvenation of an extraordinary woman who has been fostering children for 27 years.
Before, Wilson’s style was on the simple, comfortable side. Afterwards, in a black satin dress with flower detail and ruching, and her updo disguising thinning hair, she was a diva.
Lorna Burke
Age: 45
Height: 5’2″
Occupation: Guest House Proprietor
Children: Two girls
Hobbies: Baking, interior decorating.
Lorna Burke definitely struck us as a woman who knows exactly what she wants. But. then again, we’ll leave you to decide on that. Though conservative, the Portland sweetheart eagerly accepted the offer for a makeover but had some strict instructions for the team.
NO MAKE-UP! That did put a bit of a crimp in our plans, but nothing that could stop yet another fantastic makeover of a deserving foster mom. Here, Burke wears a black and white silk wrap blouse, with a mandarin collar that gives the effect of a longer neck and ruched short sleeves, which trim the arms. A black pencil skirt also gives the appearance of a longer, leaner figure.
Jem James
For Jem James, the second foster mom to be made over, February 7, was her ___ (oops girls, no numbers please) birthday and sixth wedding anniversary.
The tall, robust Hanover resident arrived at the CDA all smiles and with great expectations for her transformation, and she was not disappointed. At the end of the day she looked 10 years younger. This outstanding foster mother of four was treated to an elegant mocha and tan outfit from Smart Woman – a calf length loose chiffon dress romantically capped with a ruffled hem.
