Your man’s reaction to those long, straight tresses
MANY women believe that men are innately attracted to women with long straight hair, a belief that comes in part from what we’ve been socialised to accept, and what many of us have been told by the men themselves.
Any woman with a substantial length to her hair would have had the question: “Is it yours”, and the subsequent, “Can I run my hands throught it?”. Others would have been at odds with husbands and boyfriends who refused to allow them to cut their hair, and celebrated is the woman who sports long, flowing locks.
A former Observer colleague was incensed when a fellow, otherwise seemingly intelligent and mature, commented on her “good” hair, and expressed appreciation for her, the type of woman who wouldn’t have to worry about getting her hair wet, as she had been blessed with Indian blood. And others otherwise blessed will spend hours upon hours at the hairdresser trying to fit the profile, trying to – admitted or not – straighten their hair for their man, often at any cost.
“The thing with the Superwave,” Batson said, “is that you can go to the beach or shower with your man and it’s no problem getting it wet. It just curls up after and you have a new hairstyle. The others just look really good, and no matter what the men say, they like to see you in it.”
And the men? While they do notice your hair, the views on weaves vary.
“Natural hair woman is who me like,” a vendor we spotted downtown chipped in. “Mi love natural tings. My woman have natural hair but from time to time she put on the wig and mi and her have it out over it.” He noted that he is neither here or there with long hair – as long as it is not bought from Mr Chin.
“No man, no false hair caan better than natural hair. I love to feel natural hair,” Patrick Mason a National Water Commission worker told all woman. “The only false hair I am attracted to is rope twist. But hair pieces and wigs, I am not into that at all.”
Still another man, Nigel Mason, added, “I like natural hair, natural skin, natural looks – when you look at a woman, you should see Mother Nature in her.”
Said Omar B, “As long as she looks good and is well put together, it doesn’t matter if she is wearing false hair or not. As long as it fit her we don’t have a problem.”
Interestingly most of the females interviewed said their partners did not like false hair. But this did not dissuade them from going the route.
“I do it because I like the way it makes my face look,” model Shaneek Johnson said. “My boyfriend always says ‘why do you need to wear that? You are pretty without it anyway’. But I like it, plus you don’t have to get up and comb it every morning.”
