My mother-in-law dearest
THEY say that the girl a man’s mother fawns over, is oftentimes the best girl for him, as a mother can spot a loser a thousand miles away.
So when it’s time to get that introduction down, many women quake, as they know that if the mother hates them, most times there’s no future in the relationship.
We asked our readers, how did his mother react when she first met you? Did she send you packing after hearing you speak or seeing your outfit? Did you ace the mother-in-law test? And how?
Here are your stories:
My mother-in-law said we could come and live with her when I got pregnant and my husband didn’t have a job. Up to that time we hadn’t met, because she lived in another country and wasn’t at the wedding. One morning she pulled me aside and told me that I could do much better than her son. Then she told me that her gardener was Jamaican and I should meet him. I had to remind her that we were married. But she said it was done in a “third world country” and probably wasn’t legal anyway. I got out of her house as fast as I could. Her grandson is now three, and she has no interest in him.

I met my ex-boyfriend’s mother on Easter. She had invited us to church. I wore a sleeveless dress and when she saw me, she took one look at me and muttered “jezebel” under her breath. Then she told us that she had changed her mind and wouldn’t go to church that day. If she had told me that sleeveless wasn’t allowed I would have felt better. But she went on and on about “careless young girls”. I dumped my ex soon after that. Couldn’t deal with the fanatic mother.

The first time my mother-in-law saw me, she smiled with me. Then behind my back she informed her son that I was not the right person for him. I am a professional and he is not. Until today, nine years after the wedding, she is still giving me the time of my life.
She called the Child Development Agency and told them that her son is abusing his child and I knew about it. I would have gone to prison if it was not for the principal of the school the child goes to. – KM
My first introduction to my now mother-in-law was kinda awkward. My husband’s grandma had just died and I went to give my condolences and he introduced us. She wanted to know what about his former girlfriend. He had not told her he had been through with that relationship for over two years. The whole night was a long one. After nine months of courtship, he told her we were getting engaged. She wanted to know if something was up, like me being pregnant. But now, we celebrated 14 years of marriage last month and she is the best mother-in-law one could ask for. I guess she was concerned for her son.
