Gender discrimination is unacceptable
GENDER discrimination or sexism is prejudice or discrimination based on a person’s sex or gender. Sexism affects both men and women, but especially women.
The belief that one sex (usually the male) is naturally superior to the other and should dominate the most important areas of political, economic and social life has been the subject of debate for eons. Gender discrimination has denied opportunities to women in many spheres and only in recent times are women allowed to participate in certain areas of world development.
As a result the Women’s Media Watch (WMW) Jamaica, a non-governmental organisation that uses gender aware media analysis and transformative action to cultivate gender equality, justice and violence-free social relations, launched its two-year ‘I Am a PowHERhouse’ campaign last week, seeking to stimulate and motivate all actors in Jamaica to strive to achieve greater gender equality at all levels.
This is expected to be achieved by building public awareness about the importance of gender equality, obstacles to its achievement and changes that can be made throughout society to realise equality.
The campaign is funded by the United Nations Women’s Fund for Gender Equality and is being supported by notable people who lead professions that support the issues to be tackled through the campaign.
Remember, if you feel discriminated against because you are a woman, it is time to acknowledge it and speak out. It is not acceptable.
