What shall I tell my daughter?
When a young woman reaches the age of legal maturity at 18 and sets off on her journey to self-actualisation, her success will depend, to a significant extent, on the crucial life lessons she learned both directly and indirectly when she was a minor.
What are these life lessons? And why is it important that a girl learns these life lessons from her mother?
Ideally, parents in general and mothers in particular have the responsibility of teaching life lessons to their daughters that will help them avoid many of life’s pitfalls. However, busy working mothers everywhere trying to balance a career/work and family in the 21st century often worry that they are not doing a good enough job of preparing their children for adulthood. And mothers with daughters believe they have a much more daunting task than their mothers before them.
The good news, however, is that it is possible to tap into the vast, global, inter-generational and timeless resource of mother wisdom for the benefit of mothers and daughters everywhere.
The 876 Mother-Daughter Project in association with Scotiabank will host a public forum for mothers, daughters and their well-wishers, designed to help them crowdsource information, tools and resources, led by an impressive list of Jamaican thought leaders on a range of issues of importance to mothers and daughters.
Who is best positioned to tell young girls what they really need to know about boys and men? How can a young girl successfully navigate the teen years? What should pre-teen and teen girls know about friends, friendships, networking and mentoring? And what are the crucial lessons girls need to know about their personal safety and security?
These are some of the topics that will inform the discussions at What Shall I Tell My Daughter?
The event will take place on May 20 in the auditorium of the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica beginning at 5:30 pm.
The 876 Mother-Daughter Project (876MDP) is a Jamaican/Caribbean-centric, global network of mothers, daughters and their well-wishers. It seeks to present a wide range of information, tools and resources designed to help mothers and daughters of all ages and from all walks of life improve their communication skill sets vis-à-vis their understanding of, and interactions with each other. The overarching goal is to create a safe, accessible, and interactive universe of online and offline resources that cater primarily to the needs of girls 10-18 years on their journey to self-actualisation. The overall aim is to support, enhance and celebrate the mother-daughter relationship.
