Love’s pain, horrible pain
SOPHIA Burset in Orange Is The New Black said love is pain, horrible pain that you want again and again; it’s a drug some people keep seeking even after they’ve been run over and eviscerated by the people who claim to adore them.
Below readers share stories of the horrible and sometimes devastating things that have been done to them by lovers, yet they still love them.
Abigail:
He slept with my best friend in my bedroom. I found out when I went out with his friend who said to me, “You don’t know how much he is going to wreck your life. As his friend I’m telling you he’s no good for you.” I asked what he meant and he told me what happened. When I confronted my friend she denied it, then I asked him and he said it was true. I was shocked at his blatant, brutal honesty and I distanced myself for a while. That relationship lasted for four years, and it was nine months into the relationship that he did that.
Tiana:
We’ve been dating since high school and I remember while in high school he told me he had another girlfriend and I saw them together at Sovereign Centre kissing and I let it slide. I actually acted like I never saw it. Another instance was when he called me a ‘bitch’ in the presence of all his friends while we were out together, but I refused to walk away.
Christina:
He’s a police officer and we have been married for 14 years. One morning when I was heading to work I saw the vehicle usually assigned to him parked at another house. The bus stopped nearby and I sat and watched my husband walk out of another woman’s home with a baby in his arms. He kissed her goodbye. What’s worse is that people on the bus, totally oblivious to the truth, were saying that’s an example of a family man, and I sat in total disbelief. He also carried me to a function and introduced me as his sister. In a private moment I asked him his reason and he said his colleagues weren’t used to me. Yet I refused to leave. The marriage broke down earlier this year.
Nichole:
He told my family that I can’t do without him and he would make advances on my little sister, but I refused to be swayed. One day we had a disagreement and he threw my clothing out in the middle of the street at about 2:00 am and my brother had to come and get me. Why am I still with him? I can’t explain it, but we have a son together and I believe in forgiving people and giving them chances. Plus he’s a great lover.
Markland:
I’ve lived with a woman all my life. She controls the finances in the house and takes care of the home in general, but she’s abusive verbally. While she will look after the home and my needs, she will tell me how I’m good for nothing, even though I give her my entire paycheque to help with the house. She will even say her main reason for staying is because the monthly dollar is a sure thing. But I really love her. I really can’t leave her.
Raymond:
I used to date this church girl who was fearful her parents wouldn’t accept me and she hid the relationship from them the entire time and said I was just a friend. But nothing stays in the dark forever. One day I stopped by the house to see her and while talking in the living room we began kissing and her father saw. She jumped up and said I forced myself on her, and her father told me to leave before he called the police, as he did not know why I thought his pretty brown daughter wanted a black boy like me. I loved her regardless, even though she waited until five years slipped by before telling her father that we were a couple.
