Kasuli Francis: dancing is her life
TWENTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD Kingstonian Kasuli Francis is a performer, choreographer and dance teacher.
A graduate of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, her main focus is on Caribbean and West African folk forms, as well as the contemporary arts. She has performed for the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica as well as L’Acadco: A United Caribbean Dance Force.
“There is so much that one can do in this field and make a living from it,” she explained. “There is the dance therapist, teacher, choreographer, performer, dance analyst, dance journalist and many other professions. I want to do them all. I will not limit myself in this field.”
Francis has competed in the 2014 Miss Jamaica World Competition, and also does acting, track and field and hairstyling.
A risk taker who exudes confidence, she considers herself fortunate that she is able to do what she loves every day.
“I always loved dancing but I didn’t know I would pursue it as a career. I didn’t know I would be this good at it and I still think that there is more room for improvement,” she said.
“Every day is a challenge to reach somewhere better than the day before. Being humble and positive while holding on firmly to my passion has made me overcome each challenge.”
With dreams of someday travelling the world, Francis believes that dance is a medium through which she can express her thoughts without being verbal.
She has performed in several north coast hotels, weddings, funerals, and other events. She has also taught classes at summer schools.
For the future, Francis plans on using the performing arts as a means of transforming the world.
She is set to compete in the World Championships of the Performing Arts which will be held in Los Angeles from July 10 to 19.
