Domestic violence is still a problem
DOMESTIC violence is an international problem and despite efforts to eradicate its existence locally, women still continue to live at the mercy of their spouses’ hands daily.
One group which helps with intervention is Woman Incorporated, which offers crisis counselling, referral services and a 24-hour hotline at 929-2997. It deals with issues of domestic violence, domestic crises, rape, incest and sexual harassment. Its benefits include a crisis shelter, which is a temporary residence for battered women; a crisis centre, which provides counselling; the 24-hour hotline service; legal aid clinic and a skills training centre for women between 18 and 25 who are in need of long-term assistance.
Additionally, there is also the Bureau of Women’s Affairs at 929-6660, which is committed to increasing access to employment and income; upgrading women’s skills and increasing their access to credit and markets; improving work conditions of women; helping women seek redress, especially if they are victims of family violence, incest, rape and sexual harassment; eliminating legal discrimination against women; promoting women’s rights to contraception; and equal rights in terms of education.
Remember, these services come at no cost, so instead of remaining a victim, please utilise them.
