Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned

By VANESSA E CHAMBERS

Playwright William Congreve wrote in his 1697 play The Mourning Bride, “Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, nor hell a fury like a woman scorned”. Many men have confessed to experiencing or witnessing this fury, and below some share their stories.

Carl 29:

I have never been in the path of an angry woman but I have seen it first-hand, thanks to my older sister. Her babyfather broke up with her and she told him she was going to mess him up, and she did. She caused nothing but grief in his life. In the beginning I thought that she was just upset, but it got out of hand. I can’t go into details about what she did, but put it this way: he left Kingston to go live in Trelawny just to get away from her.

Allen, 38:

I went overseas to make a better life and in the process I had to get married to get my papers. This was a business marriage. I had to pay this lady to marry me and made it clear to her that I had my babymother back home in Jamaica. I was living with this woman just to make things official, but then she started to develop feelings for me. Being away from my babymother, I was lonely, so from time to time I had sex with this woman. I had moved out once the paperwork was coming through but this woman kept threatening to stall the process, so I had to ‘sweet her up’. The day she found out that my babymother and my kids were in the country was when all hell broke loose. She came to my job, scandalising my name. She told people that I used to beat her, along with a bag of lies. This went on for a long time. My babymother then overstayed in the country and this woman found out about it and called immigration on my family. She told me that if I had stayed with her this would not have happened. But in the end my babymother and kids weren’t deported and now I have a happy home.  I’m just waiting on my divorce from my foreign wife/ nightmare.

Wayne, 42:

When a woman is upset it’s one thing because she can calm down, but when a woman is angry there is no telling what she can do. I had a woman pour bleach on all my clothes because she thought I was spending too much time with my friend. I work hard Monday to Friday, I rest over the weekend, and how I rest and relax is by hanging out with a few friends, watch a football match or two, play pool, etc. One Saturday I left her at home watching TV and when I got back home and got ready for bed I noticed that she was sleeping on her side of the bed. Now this was a woman who would twist and turn, and she would usually roll over to my side of the bed. I was too tired to think about it but once I sat down on the bed I realised that it was wet so I got up and felt it. My side of the bed was soaking wet so I woke her up asking her if her side was wet and she calmly said, “No, I only poured water on your side.” I had to sleep in our son’s room. The next day I didn’t even talk to her about the bed, I just wanted to leave the house. I was about to take out my clothes to wear when I noticed that all my ‘going out’ clothes were missing. I asked for them and she said they were outside around the back. When I saw my clothes I was speechless. All of the good clothes were now tie and dye, everything was ruined. We fought that day but I couldn’t leave the house like I usually did when things got heated between us because I had nothing to wear.

Troy, 32:

I was with this lady who had some serious anger issues, but outside of that she was a nice woman. I had to leave her because she was too vengeful. Any time we had a problem she would find a way to spite me. For example, if I came home too late then she would do the same. She drove me to cheat on her and when she found out, one night I was deep in my sleep only to be awakened by a faint sawing sound. When I opened my eyes she was sitting on the bed filing my cutlass. I decided to leave because something just didn’t feel right. When I was going through the door she asked me where I was going, if I was going to my new woman. After hearing her say that I started to move a little faster but before I knew it this woman was chasing me in my own house with my own cutlass telling my how worthless and ungrateful I was, and asking me how could I cheat on her the way I did when all she did was love me. This woman had me running up and down like mad ants. In the middle of all this commotion she broke down in tears and put down the cutlass. I took it up and threw it outside. She told me she wasn’t going to hurt me, she was just upset about me cheating on her. I broke up with her a month later and she didn’t take it well at all.
