Your right to protect yourself
REPORTS from the National Family Planning Board (NFPB) indicate that decisions concerning sex are highly influenced by the breadwinners or holders of power in relationships.
Head of the NFPB Dr Sandra Knight said it is more widespread than many people think.
As a result, even though the NFPB’s sex education campaigns geared towards women are proving to be a success, decisions of that sort are being dictated by the men in the women’s lives.
Women are being forced into sexual relationships with men in order to survive, and end up with many children, most of whom they cannot care for.
Remember that once over the age of 16, you can access contraception from your doctors, clinics, hospitals and pharmacies. If the situation is abusive and the man refuses to use a condom, there are other discreet forms of contraception that you can discuss getting with your health care provider.
Also, remember that there are systems in place to help you remove yourself from abusive situations. Take the leap of faith and become empowered to leave.
