Anorgasmia: Why can’t I climax?
AN orgasm is a pleasurable sensation accompanied by rhythmic contractions of the vaginal musculature, Fallopian tubes and pelvic muscles that usually culminates the act of sexual intercourse.
Anorgasmia is the medical term for regular difficulty reaching an orgasm after ample sexual stimulation, causing one personal distress.
Anorgasmia is a common occurrence, affecting a significant number of women. The woman may feel as if sex is incomplete without achieving an orgasm, whilst the male may feel like he is not “macho” enough to let his partner reach climax and thus this can potentially be a tremendous blow to his ego.
Symptoms vary from never experiencing an orgasm to difficulties achieving orgasms. The symptoms may be situational as well, that is, some women can only achieve orgasm from oral sex.
Most women believe that there must be a physical cause for anorgasmia; however, even though this may be true, there may be both a psychological and relationship aspect associated.
Physical causes include certain chronic medical conditions (such as autoimmune diseases), medications (such as anti-depressants), gynaecological conditions (such as post hysterectomy and removal of ovaries), alcohol/smoking and menopause. There are numerous psychological causes, but some include anxiety and depression.
A history and examination by the doctor can identify if there are any physical causes of anorgasmia.
Treatment can be difficult, however, it depends on the cause and adequate counselling of the patient. Lifestyle changes include eating healthier and exercise. New sexual positions may also be beneficial. Therapy in the form of couples counselling, psychological counselling and sex therapy may be needed.
If there is a medical condition, it should be identified, and treated. Oestrogen can be given to post menopausal women. Alternative therapy such as acupuncture, though not proven, has shown some benefit.
