Young mummy diaries: When you feel stuck
THIS column is called Young Mummy Diaries for a reason. I use this medium to be as honest and as vulnerable as I possibly can without exposing my family too much as they deserve some privacy. All things considered, I write like I would in my diary with the hope of inspiring other mothers and myself as we find our way on this road called parenting.
Three weeks have passed since I have been able to put my fingers to the keyboard to write. I was simply drained, overwhelmed, tired and plain frustrated! I just couldn’t for the life of me feel like getting out of bed, much less write. Every morning after preparing the ‘tribe’ for school, I would say, “Ok, I am going to write now”. Well, you know how that ended!
Have you ever just felt stagnant, confused, annoyed and stuck? Well, the past few weeks have been all those feelings I described and more. I was a wreck. At this juncture in my life, a lot of drastic changes have been taking place, but whilst going through changes, it can take a heavy toll on you emotionally, physically and spiritually.
Many times as mothers, or parents for that matter, we may find ourselves getting overwhelmed with having to juggle the many hats we wear just to make things work in our family lives — whether financial pressures, proper time management, balancing work life and home life or coping with being unemployed. Could it be that you are experiencing relationship issues, separation or divorce? Is there a health issue you or a loved one may be battling with? The list could go on, but I’ll just stop because what experience has taught me is that as sure as we have life, we will have challenges. But I’m happy to say as sure as we have challenges, we also have a way out! How? The truth is that the answer is within us.
I want to share what I used to get over my ‘hump’ and how I refocused and got back to positive.
1. Staying close to positive people
1. Staying close to positive people
During my recent ‘low’ time I visited some older female friends of mine. They just have a way with their wisdom, coupled with their calm approach to life. Having experience under their belt, their words gave me a sense of peace. Having positive, praying people around you is always a plus!
2. Pray, pray, pray
2. Pray, pray, pray
I know it sounds cliché, but when you activate prayer it opens up a place for you to be vulnerable. Do not hide from your problems, they are going nowhere. I’ve found that it’s best to call them out and have a conversation. Connect with your Creator and remember you are never a victim, but a VICTOR!
3. Plan through the pain
3. Plan through the pain
No matter what is happening, force yourself to focus past your pain. Pick up a book and write. If you are feeling overwhelmed by debt, for example, take up the bills, tally them, and look at all the possible ways that you can work through them. Be real with yourself and readjust your plans. You’ll never fail, you just need some remixing and refixing.
4. Ask for help
4. Ask for help
Kill your ego. Call a friend, co-worker, family member, and ask for help. Stop trying to make it on your own. It’s totally impossible! Ask any successful business person, they will tell you they made it with a lot of help.
PS, Happy Father’s Day when it comes to my husband Marki and all the amazing fathers out there who are making it their duty to ‘father’ their children emotionally, spiritually and financially.
