Feeling dizzy during workouts?
Some people experience dizziness while exercising or during any extreme exertion. This is mainly because they are dehydrated or are not breathing properly. Fitness Coach Rohan Gordon says clients also get dizzy because they suffer from medical conditions such as vertigo and low blood sugar.
Vertigo is a sensation of feeling off balance. It is a symptom, rather than a condition itself. It may manifest with dizziness.
Here’s what Gordon recommends if you know you have vertigo:
• Sleep on your back.
• Prop your head up with an extra pillow.
• When sitting, do not slouch forward.
• Avoid exercises which require you to bend down or lie down.
Recommendations for individuals who have low blood sugar:
• Do not skip meals.
• Never exercise on an empty stomach.
• Before your morning exercise, consume a light breakfast to keep up your sugar levels.
• Eat a light snack in the evening.
• Do not overeat late at nights or skip breakfast in the morning.
• Ensure you eat at least an hour before you exercise.
• Stay hydrated, especially while exercising.
• Take deep breaths while exercising.
If you find that you are dizzy while working out, stop immediately. Stay upright and do not lie down. If you are aware that low blood sugar is the probable cause, consume a snack or drink that is high in sugar. If you are unaware of a medical condition, but recognise that on more than one occasion you get dizzy during workouts, consult your physician to get the correct diagnosis and treatment methods.
