JMMB’s all-woman safety and security event empowers
AN all-female audience recently gathered at JMMB Group’s head office to be engaged, empowered and educated in a multi-faceted workshop dubbed “Her Protection: Personal Safety and Security”. The event provided an opportunity for the scores of women in attendance to garner some practical pointers on personal safety, online security and financial security from a range of experts.
During the presentation on keeping your person and property safe, special investigator Jason Samuels of the Jamaica Constabulary Force cautioned the participants to be alert and aware of their surroundings.
“Most crimes take place in familiar settings, and are often perpetrated by individuals familiar to the victim,” he said.
Against this background he reminded the women to be vigilant even in familiar settings, observing any suspicious activities as they approach their homes.
“Keep your doors closed even while you are away for short periods — such as carrying groceries from the vehicle,” he warned, while cautioning about excessive sharing of personal information on social media sites such as posts of children, vacation details and locations.
Stephen Roomes of Hawkeye Jamaica echoed similar sentiments.
He explained that electronic devices such as panic buttons and automation can offer extra benefits in ensuring personal safety and security, especially in cases of emergency. He also highlighted the value of vehicle-tracking devices to assist motorists in the event of theft, while also noting that the ability to monitor the use of the vehicle is a good opportunity for business owners and parents.
With the increased incidence of cyber attacks, JMMB’s chief information officer Sheldon Powe outlined cyber security tips designed to help the attendees to enjoy their virtual social space in a secure manner. For financial security, the energetic Michelle Sinclair-Doyley, manager, client financial education, JMMB, underscored the value of being covered by insurance, to ensure that in the event of an emergency or other unfortunate incident such as loss, death, or accidents, their financial goals do not get significantly derailed.
Following the panel discussion segment, the attendees also had the opportunity to participate in demonstrations offering hands-on experience in self-defence with Jeffery Azan, who demonstrated some basic blocking and defence techniques; while also sharing some best practices in responding to threats. This segment was complemented by a yoga session led by Shakira Williams to give the ladies an opportunity to relax and meditate in a bid to refresh their minds and ensure their good mental health, which is an important part of personal safety.
