Before you embark on that New Year fitness journey…
IT’S that time of year when millions of people around the world are planning to put pen to paper to create their New Year’s resolutions lists. One common resolution is to change their lifestyle, which includes commencing a new health and fitness routine. This main goal usually puts other resolutions on the back burner, especially for those who are determined to have their bodies ready for the year ahead.
An important point to note, according to fitness trainer Rohan Gordon, is that exercise is 90 per cent mental and 10 per cent physical. The mind is very powerful and sometimes tends to resist change. So it is imperative that you launch out into the New Year with a positive and open mind, ready to start your journey. Here is Gordon’s list of things to do before starting your new exercise routine.
1. As a beginner, it is wise to consult a fitness trainer to settle on a routine that will produce results. Additionally, he or she will be able to correct you if you are doing an exercise move incorrectly. Doing exercise moves wrong can result in serious injuries.
2. Create a schedule that will give you time for work, recreation, exercise and enough rest.
3. Take the best care of yourself, through healthy lifestyle choices.
4. Do a medical check-up to see if all is well, both physically and mentally.
5. Change your diet to include healthy foods. Remember that diet and exercise go hand in hand.
6. Consult a nutritionist about your new diet. Eating healthy does not have to be boring. A nutritionist can efficiently guide you on including your favourite foods in your health regimen.
7. Stay positive. Believe in yourself and encourage yourself that you can do it.
8. Select a workout routine that you will enjoy doing.
9. Find a friend or group with the same aim. This makes it more enjoyable and easier to undertake.
10. Invest in good workout attire. Your workout clothes will need constant washing, more than your regular clothes. Choose clothing that can easily withstand frequent washing.
