Nadia Mitchell — Winning hearts by building lasting relationships
IT’S impossible not to feel the warm and friendly energy exuding from Nadia Mitchell as she smiles and attends to customers at the Fairview branch of GK General Insurance (GKI) in Montego Bay. The company’s new branch lead, who joined the team in January this year, skillfully uses what she claims are her best assets to brighten each customer’s day as she provides an essential service on behalf of parent group GraceKennedy.
These assets are her winning personality and an ability to easily build relationships.
“I’m very approachable. Somehow people just feel comfortable talking to me and telling me things all the time,” she said. “I also like the fact that I’m sensitive to the world at large. I’m very intuitive, so I can gauge your feelings and your personality pretty quickly.”
The 41-year-old has proudly taken the reigns to steer the company’s second largest branch in achieving its newest targets for growth in its customer base and brand visibility. Up for the challenge, Mitchell plans to accomplish this by focusing on building lasting relationships through her customer interactions.
“It’s not a ‘lock-up-in-your-office’ branch manager type of role; it’s very interactive,” she explained.
Mitchell has spent most of her career, which started just after studying marketing at the University of Technology, in the insurance field with previous tenures at reputable local companies such as Globe Insurance, Guardian General and General Accident. The Kingston native has always pictured herself climbing to this height on the corporate ladder as she now leads the Montego Bay Branch, which comprises eight employees. Her first major branch initiative with the company just took place last Friday and constituted the second leg of an islandwide roadshow aimed at highlighting the GKI brand during the hurricane season as part of the company’s newest ‘Take Cover’ campaign.
But it’s not all work and no play for the Glenmuir High School graduate. The self-professed girl’s girl typically spends her weekends hanging out with close friends by going to the beach or lyming at each other’s houses.
“While I’m committed to the job, I’m not a workaholic. I can shut off the company phone and go into leisure mode,” she said.
She also loves to read, play tennis and travel, having gotten started on her bucket list of visiting at least 40 countries in her lifetime with 13 currently under her belt, including The United Arab Emirates, Spain and Switzerland.
At the top of her career, Mitchell urges upcomers in their respective professional fields to stand out and create their own space.
“You have to differentiate yourself. I also believe it’s important that you show up and you show well. Every day, give your best and take the opportunity to learn and then use the knowledge to your advantage,” she shared.
