Weddings gone wrong

BY KIMBERLEY HIBBERT

MORE often than not, the whirlwind events and drama associated with wedding planning end on the wedding day, when all the work that went into making the day special is evidenced in a seamless production. But sometimes when it rains it pours, and the bride and groom’s special day goes terribly wrong, as shared by the people below.

Shaniel C:

My cousin didn’t like the man his mom was marrying and he and my brother punctured the tyres of the limo that was to carry the bride and groom. When they finished the church service and were to go to take pictures and attend the reception, there was a huge delay and the bride and groom had to drive in a not-so-nice car. The marriage lasted only a few months and the truth came out years later when we were all grown up. By the way, I started crying when it was time for me to walk down the aisle. I was the mini bride and I turned back and someone still carried me down the aisle while I hollered even more.

Mitzy B:

I was in the line to catch the bouquet and I “technically” caught it, but before I could securely grip it a desperate woman snatched it out of my hand. An elderly woman came across and gave me a proper cuss out. “A so yuh ago have yuh man and mek other woman come tek him weh from you?!” I’ve not been in a bouquet-catching line since.

Kerry-Ann N:

The bride’s tooth fell out and went into the cake.

Jasmin J:

I was at my cousin’s wedding and the best man thought that I was the wife. I wondered why, but later found out that the groom was in love with me and always told his friend about me, showing him pictures, etc. It was the strangest thing especially since the bride was dressed as the bride.

Elizabeth P:

I went to an in-law’s wedding and there were about 30 people there. I was sitting at the table with the groom’s aunts and uncle when the reception began. They served the first couple tables and we noticed that our table and others were not being served, so after we waited a while, we asked for water. They didn’t even have that to give us! Eventually we got one plate of food at the table where five of us were sitting.

Mark W:

I went to my sister’s wedding and the best man was stoned. He was so drunk he couldn’t even walk straight. He had to give a speech at the reception and he went on for about half an hour, talking about himself and telling everyone to shut up. Mind you, he had the actual speech written on a piece of paper in his hand️. They eventually clapped him off stage and he walked off looking all proud like he delivered an Obama-type speech.

Yazmin D:

I went to a wedding that was scheduled to start at 2:00 pm and it didn’t get started until 5:00 pm. Apparently the bride had to go and get the reception area ready, while the groom and guests were in the church waiting.

Robin H:

I went to a wedding about 15 years ago as the wedding singer. From we left the church it started to rain non-stop and when we reached the venue for the reception the power went, so there was lots of rain and no electricity. They found a few candles and proceeded. The bride cried and there was a fuss between the bride’s and the groom’s families, with each saying that the other side had worked obeah. So everything was cut short and on our way out the power came back.

Anthoniel M:

I went to a wedding back in the day when people used to have their wedding reception at home on the verandah. After the ceremony at the church all the guests went to the house while the bride and groom went to take pictures. Can I tell you that the people shared out the food and drinks, and people were watching TV and just chilling. By the time the bridal party came everybody was either gone or was no longer in the mood for the excitement. The bride was livid.

Jonothan L:

Well, I witnessed one of the saddest weddings ever. We were in the church and the bride had already walked up the aisle and in the middle of the praise and worship session another lady dressed in white with veil and bouquet entered. Now the bride had some real cantankerous relatives who just started chipping some badwords, and interestingly attacked the groom and not the strange woman who came in. The police had to be called.

Alison W:

I went to a wedding in the country and dressed up nicely, or as they would say, “dress nuh puss back foot”. I noticed three women on the back bench but said nothing because you know relatives will come from near and far and it’s not everyone you’re going to know. The women were also at the reception and sat quietly, smiling, and they had their point and shoot cameras taking pictures too. When they were about to cut the cake, one got up and bawled out, “Yuh think the night did ago dun good?” When she said that she turned over the cake and her friends stood up and started turning over tables. By the time I was to get up to go back to my vehicle and make a hasty retreat, bottles started flying. I had to be holed up in a corner. The poor bride had to run away with her mother.

Felicity R:

When I lived with my grandmother in the country we got invited to a wedding and in the morning we were getting ready and fixing up and the bride turned up crying. My grandmother asked her what was wrong and why she wasn’t getting ready with her bridesmaids. She said the groom called her and told her that he didn’t want to get married anymore, and it was over.
