Single and ready to mingle
IT’S that time of year again — love is in the air and for single people, especially those who are desperate to find love, seeing couples drool over each other can be a slap in the face. But having no one to send you roses doesn’t mean you need to throw yourself a pity party; there are a number of ways to protect yourself from drowning yourself in 24 hours of sorrow. Below we tell you how.
Stay away from social media
If you know you will end up questioning your self-esteem or brewing feelings of worthlessness or any other emotion that makes you feel less than awesome, then avoid social media altogether. Chances are that there will be a tonne of lovey-dovey messages and pictures of your friends and their significant others. Also, if you do decide to check social media, don’t go about judging people or how they decide to celebrate as it will only make you unhappy and bitter.
Hang out with single friends
Certainly, you aren’t the only single friend on Valentine’s Day, so plan something fun with your single or available friends if you prefer this over time alone. So whether it is you are going to go bowling, you’re going to have a party at one of your places, going to watch an action-filled movie, or just settle for Netflix, the important thing at the end of the day is just having fun.
Make it a self-care day
Remember, there is no substitute for self-love, so for V-Day think about how you can reward yourself for simply being you. You need to first remember that you don’t need someone to do anything for you, after all, no one knows you better than you. So book a spa appointment and get yourself a nice mani and pedi, treat yourself to something that you have wanted, and run yourself a warm bubble bath. Put some of your favourite music on, enjoy a glass or two of your favourite wine, and enjoy your own company.
Don’t give in to desperation
It can be quite tempting when you are alone to accommodate the first person that approaches you, even when they are an absolute loser. Chances are you will have to be forcing it or you may end up regretting putting yourself in the position. So don’t throw a pity party, don’t sell yourself short, and most importantly, don’t play with someone else’s emotions.
Give others love
You have plenty of people in your life who love you unconditionally and make themselves available to you emotionally and physically whenever you need them. So pick up a pack of cards and write a short note inside telling them that you love them and if you would like you can add a treat. It is likely that you will make their day and knowing you brightened the day of those you love will give you a feeling of fulfilment.
Catch up on your reading or TV series
What could be better than getting cosy in your bed with that book that you have been dying to read or getting to catch up or binge-watch some series without having to worry about waiting for anyone to move to the next episode? Not much, right? And that is exactly what you have earned by being single this Valentine’s Day. Enjoy while it lasts.
It’s just another day
Don’t get too hooked to the idea of the day, and even if that extra single feeling is kicking in, remember that it’s just another day and above all be grateful that you don’t have to spend the day building a façade for an otherwise toxic relationship.
