The AJYA RAINWEAR COLLECTION
Attorney-at-law Alveta Knight admits she has been a fashion designer for many years… albeit in her head. Once she shared her design dreams with friend and Island Child Style conceptualiser Michelle Gordon, her fantasy became a tangible runway collection.
Knight, who cringed each time she saw children getting drenched in a downpour, knew she wanted to redesign the typical children’s raincoat, and in 2016 she did just that. The Ajya Rainwear Collection debuted in 2016 at the first Island Child Style runway show complete with the tagline… “walk, run, skip or jump in the rain”.
Her collection features poncho-style raincoats in bold prints with big zippers and oversized pockets that protect children and their personal effects from the elements. Knight describes the collection presented at the Island Child Style SMS Edition 2019 on October 5, as “light, frivolous and fun”; it was her third collection.
What’s next for her? For starters, there are dreams of someday displaying her rainwear collection in an Ajya store, and with adults already green with envy over the kids’ designs, she is considering an Ajya Rainwear collection for older folks, too.
