CELEBRATING WOMEN IN ENGINEERING: Help for students of engineering
On International Women in Engineering Day, Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPS) acknowledged the engineers and the women in engineering across its organisation — Sheveena Haye, grid engineer, transmission; Shanna Halsall, technician engineer; Polly Vernon, network planning engineer; Michelle Mcfee, specialist engineer, transmission systems; Alaina Rose, protection engineer; Shawna Farquharson, protection engineer; Sherry-Ann Henry, geographic info systems, technician engineer; and Timara Taylor, plant engineer, for their stellar work.
The company’s commitment to the field, and to educating youngsters entering the field, is evident as, since 2016, the JPS Foundation has paid millions of dollars for hundreds of students to sit the Caribbean Secondary education Certificate (CSEC) industrial technology (electrical) examination. And, in 2019, the foundation said it would be offering, come 2020, a $1.3 million (US$10,000) scholarship annually to a student wishing to pursue a first degree in electrical engineering.
The foundation pledges to improve lives and empower Jamaicans through charitable development projects in energy education, conservation and innovation.
