Rally driver Joel Jackson was the fastest of the 10 drivers in the two-lap finale of Team Streetz’s Asphalt Assault: Wet n Slide dexterity event held on Saturday, July 8, at the Palisadoes International Raceway, Kingston.

“I was a little clumsy in the one-lapper, but made up for it in the two-lapper,” Jackson told the Jamaica Observer‘s weekly Auto magazine.

Jackson spend the majority of the event battling in his Mazda Miata, a street car, against the winner of the first round in April, Demar Lee.

Lee, driving his rally-prepared Subaru Impreza STi, appeared to be the dominant force taking the PRO class and posting the fastest single lap for the night. Even then, Jackson wasn’t that far off.

“I think the Miata was very strong in the slalom because it’s a really short wheelbase car. I think that was where I was able to make up more time because I could carry more speed through the slalom, whereas the four-wheel drive guys would be faster through the loop sections,” explained Jackson.

It turned out to be more than that, as Jackson danced his demure rear-wheel drive Miata through the cones with utmost precision, avoiding any time penalties caused by errant contact.

Lee wasn’t as lucky, as the significant power, speed and traction proved a bit much for the course leading to several time penalties that dropped him to second in the top-10 finale.

Rajay Smith, in his Toyota Altezza, was the next closest – a massive seven seconds behind in third. Smith was fifth in class. While Rajendra Jadusingh continued to be a top contender in his Mini One, ending the event as the fastest front-wheel drive, it was Darren Givans who ended up representing the front-wheel drive class in the two lap finale with a fourth place run in his Toyota Corolla. Completing the top five was another rally driver, Spencer Whittingham, in his BMW 318Ti.
