Market Bag: Bad Sekki takes on $1,500 ‘Run a Boat’ challenge

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Market prices held mostly steady this week at the Coronation Market with some produce recording slight increases despite the recent rainfall that have eased drought conditions for farmers.

During the Observer team’s visit to the downtown Kingston landmark, tomatoes held firm at $300 per pound, while carrots increased by $50, moving from $350 to $400 per pound. Onions and Irish potatoes also recorded $50 increases, with both now selling for $250 per pound, up from $200 last week.

Sweet peppers saw a more significant jump, climbing by $100 from $400 to $500 per pound. Meanwhile, sweet potatoes remained steady at $450 per pound, while Scotch bonnet peppers held at $600.

Lettuce also maintained last week’s price of $1,000 per pound, while sorrel offered shoppers some relief, falling sharply from $700 to $400 per pound.

In this special edition of Market Bag, popular Jamaican content creator Karlando “Bad Sekki” Bailey goes head-to-head with host Carlysia Ramdeen in the “Run a Boat” challenge.

With just $1,500 and 15 minutes on the clock, the two take on the challenge of shopping for ingredients to “run a boat” for four people.
