Inspiration comes in various forms and leading communication and entertainment provider, Flow, took several approaches to inspire young girls during its recent Girls in ICT (GIICT) Day activities. The GIICT Expo was its main activity on April 27, which was an interactive and engaging event impacting almost 200 girls from 12 high schools. There were also exhibitors, key industry players and a special keynote address by Jamaican born Google-exec, Natalie Bennett.

In addition to the Expo, Flow hosted a more intimate session with girls at the Convent of Mercy Academy, “Alpha”. On April 28, Bennett, who is a past student of Alpha, led a ‘fireside’ chat with 30 girls. Bennett discussed the career opportunities within the field of ICT and the importance of more women studying and working in the sector. She also spoke to the students about her journey from the Kingston inner city to working with one of the most recognized technology companies in the world. Bennett was well received as she encouraged the girls to never stop dreaming and to work hard towards their goals.

Business Communications Manager at Flow, Deleen Powell, commented that the pop-up appearance at Convent of Mercy Academy, “Alpha” proved to be a great inclusion to the overall GIICT plans.

“Our goal for Girls in ICT Day is to make every girl a believer that they can thrive in the ICT sector. Through the school visit at Alpha, Bennett had the opportunity to expand on her message at the Expo and connect with the girls in a transformational way that I’m sure they will remember for a long time,” said Powell.

Bennett also enjoyed delightful discussions with the young women where she shared why she believes ICT is one of the most rewarding fields to work in. Bennet said the sector allows persons to develop solutions that can help others and empower persons from all walks of life to empower themselves. She also highlighted how lucrative working in the ICT sector can be once individuals have the right training and certification.

During the session two students received spot prizes of a tablet and smart phone while all the girls in attendance received Flow credit.

Flow’s Girls in ICT Day activities created a platform for young girls to explore their passion for technology, gain valuable insights, and be inspired by industry leaders. By fostering an environment of empowerment and innovation, Flow continues to contribute to the growth and advancement of the ICT industry and to champion greater equality, diversity and inclusion in Jamaica.
