Flow volunteers on a mission for Good

Flow’s Mission Week has come alive with the spirit of community service as scores of dedicated employee volunteers collaborate for an impactful mission of making a difference.

Each year, the employees of Flow and other subsidiaries of its parent company, Liberty Latin America, dedicate a week to volunteer their time and passions for community-building initiatives across Jamaica, Latin America and the Caribbean. This year, Mission Week takes place between November 13 – 17, and consists of activities designed to strengthen the bonds between the company and communities across the pillars: Learning, Broadband Access, and Disaster Relief.

Leading up to Mission Week, the Flow team kicked off its activities with feeding the homeless at the Marie Atkins Night Shelter in Kingston. Under the theme ‘Lunch & Lyme’, the Flow team fed 60 persons and also spent time with them learning about their stories. It was a meaningful experience that reinforced the importance of gratitude and empowering others.

Inspector of the Poor, Mavis Farquharson, commended the Flow team on the activity and noted that these types of initiatives were invaluable to the operations of the Shelter as they also positively impact the mental well-being of the residents.

Residents at the Marie Atkins Night Shelter are served by the Flow Foundation’s Community Programmes Coordinator, Courtney Bell (left) and Flow Employee Volunteer, Kerry-Ann Edwards, during the treat for the residents executed as part of Flow’s Mission Week 2023.

“As the Manager for the Shelter, we welcome activities which cater to our residents while leaving them with their dignity intact. I like that the Flow volunteers didn’t just feed the residents but spent time talking to them. Sometimes that is even more valuable than the meals that are served,” Farquharson shared.

She added, “We thank the Flow team for even including the staff members here at the Shelter. It was a welcomed surprise and I commend Flow for caring about the homeless community.”

One resident of the Shelter said, “I know I can speak for all of us and say how much we appreciate this treat. You know us Jamaicans always want a little something different especially on a Friday evening so getting this KFC meal from Flow was extra special for us. We really enjoyed it and a heartfelt thanks to Flow.”

Commenting on Flow’s activity at the Shelter, the Flow Foundation’s Community Programmes Coordinator, Courtney Bell, stated, “Mission Week stands as a beacon of Flow’s dedication to community engagement, reinforcing our belief that true growth is measured not just in connectivity and technological advancements, but in the positive impact we create in people’s lives. We really enjoyed this activity because we didn’t just feed and go. We also spent time interacting and speaking with the residents and they really have interesting life stories that impacted us. It is a reminder that we each have a responsibility to be our brother’s keepers.”

Along with the feeding of the homeless, Flow’s Mission Week initiatives under the Learning pillar include a job preparation seminar with students at Northern Caribbean University, a School Based Assessment development workshop with four high schools and a Connected & Protected Internet Safety talk at Foga Road High in collaboration with Office of the Children’s Advocate.

Under the Broadband Access pillar, Flow will provide internet connectivity at the Bellevue Hospital Learning Centres, the Jackie Norman Youth Entrepreneurial Programme, and the Cross Keys Community Centre.
