Shanoya Douglas tastes rare defeat at hand of Trinidadian Alexxe Henry
KINGSTON, Jamaica— Jamaica’s rising star Shanoya Douglas was beaten into second place in the Class One 100m at the PureWater/RDanny Williams/JC development meet on Saturday by Alexxe Henry of Trinidad and Tobago representing Edwin Allen High.
Henry upset the applecart, handing Douglas, the reigning Carifta Games Under-20 champion, a rare defeat, clocking 11.34 seconds (+0.8 mps), which was also a meet record.
Douglas, now representing Holland High after switching from Muschette High, was second in 11.50 seconds, with Shemonique Hazle of Hydel High some distance back in third with 12.01s.
Douglas, who won the Class Two sprint double at Champs last year, is now competing in her first year of Class One. She is also the Carifta Games Under-20 champion, having clocked 11.23s to cop gold.
Douglas is one of Jamaica’s most promising sprinters who also won a bronze medal at the Under-20 World Championship in Peru as a 16-year-old in 2024.
With the 2025 Class One champion Sabrina Dockery of Lacovia High turning professional in October 2025, Douglas is expected to dominate the Class One sprints, but now she knows she has a fight on her hands as Henry looked awesome in defeating her.
Henry has a personal best of 11.29s, but Douglas can take heart from the fact that she ran a gruelling 400m hours earlier, winning in 54.30s, which was the fastest of the day. Her time was quicker than the current Class One Champs winner Kerryann Carr of Edwin Allen, who stopped the clock at 56.22s in relaxed fashion.
Douglas will be back, and the stage is set for some epic battles with Henry throughout the season.
