WATCH: Lawrence Tavern councillor displeased with roadworks by NWA
ST ANDREW, Jamaica — Lawrence Tavern Councillor John Myers has accused the National Works Agency (NWA) of inadequate repair work on main roads in the division.
In fact, he said, parochial roads are proving more durable in the area.
“As you patch the main road and the rain fall it is gone, It is almost like you haven’t done anything. Something is wrong with how they are doing it or the material they are using,” he said on Friday.
Myers was speaking in his division after Kingston Mayor Andrew Swaby and Deputy Mayor Lorraine Dubson visited to assess repair progress on parochial roads.
Acknowledging that the main roads are busier, he urged the NWA to make them more durable.
“I am appealing for NWA officers to come out and see what the men are doing,” he said, adding “I don’t think they are doing a good job.”
Myers warned that continued poor maintenance of main thoroughfares risks further deterioration and urged the NWA to review its repair methods to ensure long-lasting results.
“I am using this media to tell them that and I don’t care what they want to say about me I am defending the people,” he added.
Swaby and Dubson had spent three days visiting several road projects across the city, meeting with residents and representative councillors to assess progress, address concerns, and discuss timelines for completion.
Swaby noted that the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) has spent more than $190 million so far repairing parochial roads across the municipality.
“Each year the KCMC has disbursed funds from its division allocation fund to fix roads individuals and these are community roads that we are fixing,” Swaby said.
He said despite limited resources the work is carried out properly.
“We don’t have enough resources to do much better but we make sure that whenever there is an allocation we fix well-needed roads and make sure that the work is done in a proper way and there’s no overrun,” he said
