20 years ago, Dutty Rock stood tall

On the Billboard Reggae Albums chart dated August 16, 2003, the #1 title was Dutty Rock by Sean Paul. Incidentally, it ranks at #10 on this week’s chart.

Dutty Rock exploded like a time bomb and sold more than six million copies globally, denting several European charts, while taking top 10 positions on the Billboard 200, Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and the UK Albums chart.

Among the hit singles from Dutty Rock were Baby Boy (with Beyonce, a reissue of the 2002 release of the album), Like Glue, I’m Still in Love with You with Sasha, Gimmi The Light, and Get Busy.

Dutty Rock won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2004.

Wayne Wonder’s album No Holding Back was on the charts 20 years ago at #3.

Other albums that were on the chart 20 years ago this week include No Holding Back by Wayne Wonder (#3), DragonFly by Ziggy Marley (#4), Lucky Day by Shaggy (#7), Friends for Life by Buju Banton (#8), Da Real Thing by Sizzla (# 12) and Tropical Storm by Beenie Man (#14).

Back on this week’s Billboard Reggae Albums chart, Bob Marley and the Wailers clock 187 non-consecutive weeks in pole position, while Best of Shaggy: The Boombastic Collection by Shaggy holds down the #2 position.

Endless Summer by The Elovaters, which debuted at #4 last week, inches up to #3, while No Love by Byron Messia dips to #4.

Dutty Classics Collection by Sean Paul is firm at #5, while Greatest Hits by UB40 rises from #9 to #6.

Set in Stone, Wisdom, and World on Fire by Stick Figure are #7, #8, #9, respectively.

Byron Messia’s Talibans remains at #32 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart. It fares better on Rhythmic Airplay moving up from #24 to #20. On the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop chart, the song backtracks from #23 to #24. It slides down from #12 to #15 on Rap Airplay.

Talibans II credited to Burna Boy x Byron Messia, remains at #3 on the US Afrobeats Songs chart. Meanwhile, Them Belly Full (But We Hungry) credited to Bob Marley and the Wailers featuring Skip Marley and Rema, debuts at #30.

On Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, My Bad by The Chainsmokers and Shenseea tumbles from #23 to #32.

Lipstick Lover by singer Janelle Monae, which samples Mad Cobra’s Flex, finally takes over the #1 spot on Adult R&B Airplay chart. Meanwhile, Wind Me Up by Dante Bowe featuring Anthony B, slips from #14 to #15.

On regional charts, Afrobeat Medley by The Greaves Brothers spends a fifth week at the top of the South Florida Reggae chart.

Freddie McGregor’s I’ll Be Waiting zooms from #13 to #3, while My Sweet Lord by Damian Marley (#24) and Hooked on You by Mezmo (#25) are this week’s new entries.

Over on the New York Reggae chart, Lord I Thank You by Nitty Kutchie and Buju Banton spends a second week in the #1 spot.

Call Him by Kevin Downswell and Bounty Killer moves up from #17 to #14, while Damian Marley’s cover of George Harrison’s My Sweet Lord steps up from #28 to #20.
