WHILE writing songs for her 2021 album Water, Toronto-based singer Ammoye had an idea which resulted in the song Count on Me — one of the biggest hits of her career to date.

A remix of the song, which is also produced by Jamaican producers Natural High Music, is currently number one on the Reggae Vibez Top Ten Canadian Reggae chart.

“I was writing for my album when the idea came to me. I had just come back from Belize and we were in lockdown during the pandemic, and during that time I saw all the different uncertainties. I always go to my higher self to connect and figure out what’s going on. Count on Me was a song that was channelled from my higher self,” Ammoye told the Jamaica Observer.

“No matter how things look, I always have the support and things are always going to be okay. That’s really the message in the song, offering support to anyone who’s going through distress and mental health issues,” she continued.

Count on Me (remix) was released in May. The song was given support by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Canada and used in one of its campaigns to help build awareness of mental health issues.

Born Shernette Evans, Ammoye is a five-time JUNO Award nominee in the Reggae Recording of the Year category, Canada’s equivalent to the Grammy.

Originally from Halse Hall in Clarendon, she migrated to Toronto, Canada, as a teenager.

One the Billboard Reggae Albums chart Bob Marley and the Wailers clocks 146 non-consecutive weeks in the number one spot with Legend.

Shaggy’s Best of Shaggy: The Boombastic Collection is firm at two, similar to Wisdom by Stick Figure holding steady once more at number three.

Sean Paul’s Dutty Classics Collection re-enters the chart at number four, Greatest Hits by UB40 dips to five, and Stick Figure’s World on Fire backtracks to six.

Dutty Rock by Sean Paul is number seven, Set in Stone by Stick Figure at eight, Gifted by Koffee is nine, and Burna Boy’s Outside is 10.

On the Cayman Islands, Hot 104.1 FM is reporting that Faded Away by Kabaka Pyramid, featuring Buju Banton and Junior Byles, is number one on their chart.

In South Florida, Don’t Do It by Hopeton Lindo, Marcia Griffiths and Freddie McGregor spends a fourth week at number one.

Leroy Sibbles’ Brown Eyes steps up from 22 to 19, while Leroy Smart’s Always and Forever bolts from 16 to 13.

New entries are Original Culture DJ (number 22) by Brigadeer Jerry, and Let Me Please You by Novel-T and Peter G (number 24).

Richie Stephens’ Reverse the Curse spends an eighth week at number one on the New York Reggae chart while Fifty by Tanya Stephens and Patra bolts from nine to seven.

Terry Linen’s Playing Money Games steps up from 14 to nine while Hezron’s Save the Children is up to 17 from 21.

The new entry this week is Faded Away by Kabaka Pyramid featuring Buju Banton and Junior Byles.
