Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards judge Kadean Vendryes continues her review series of the restaurants at the Marketplace with Saffron Indian Cuisine.
Tucked away in The Courtyard at the Marketplace, Saffron Indian Cuisine delivers an inviting indoor/outdoor dining experience that goes beyond traditional Indian fare, offering an impressive selection of Asian Fusion and Thai dishes as well.
For a solo mid-afternoon lunch on Saturday, May 8, I opted to dine in for entrée and dessert. I was greeted at the entrance by a male host, Charles, who later became my server. Charles presented the restaurant’s three menus, but the rich aromas and tempting descriptions quickly led me toward the Indian offerings.
Entrée: Butter Chicken, Kashmiri Naan & Jasmine Rice

The star of the meal was undoubtedly the Butter Chicken. Tender pieces of tandoori chicken were simmered in a rich, velvety tomato-based sauce infused with butter and cream. Every bite delivered a perfect balance of savoury spices and comforting sweetness.

The Kashmiri Naan was a delightful surprise. Soft, warm naan bread stuffed with coconut, raisins, and dried fruits added a subtle sweetness that paired beautifully with the creamy butter chicken.

Served alongside was fragrant jasmine rice, which soaked up every drop of the flavourful sauce and completed the dish perfectly.
Dessert: Chocolate Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream
Just when I thought the meal could not get any better, dessert arrived. The Chocolate Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream was pure indulgence. Served sizzling in a cast-iron skillet filled with chocolate syrup, the warm, fudgy brownie contrasted wonderfully with the cold vanilla ice cream. I would suggest a creamier and intensely rich ice cream for a more decadent finish.

A refreshing glass of natural lemonade provided the perfect balance to the rich flavours of the meal and kept the palate refreshed throughout.

The table was not set with water and the server, Charles, missed this basic service step of offering upon my arrival.
Final Thoughts
Saffron Indian Cuisine combines welcoming service (albeit prompting the server who was very receptive to feedback), generous portions, and authentic flavours into an enjoyable dining experience. From the creamy butter chicken to the indulgent brownie dessert, every course was satisfying and memorable. Whether you are a long-time fan of Indian cuisine or looking to explore something new, Saffron offers a dining experience that is well worth a visit.
