    Countdown to the 27th staging of the Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards

    “Heaven on Earth” is how the legendary Hollywood actor Errol Flynn had famously described the parish of Portland. He had proclaimed it as being “More beautiful than any woman I have ever known”. Specifically, he was captivated by its capital, Port Antonio, where his name is synonymous with the area itself. Indeed, his identity and legacy live on through the Errol Flynn Marina.

    Portland, a lush tropical rainforest, is on the northeastern end of the island. Heading in an easterly direction from the town of Port Antonio, you pass world renowned attractions and notable landmarks. The blissfully beautiful and serene Frenchman’s Cove. The Blue Lagoon, a natural wonder that is a national monument.

    Boston Bay where Jamaican Jerk cuisine originated. There are so many places at which to stop to appreciate the richness of Portland’s biodiversity, culture and history.

    Travelling along the coastal roads the contrasting scenery is awe-inspiring. On the left are the waves of the Caribbean Sea rolling in, in hues that range from the lighter vibrant aquas and turquoises to the deeper vivid royal and sapphire blues. On the right rising majestically are the Blue and John Crow Mountains.

    In 2015, these mountains were designated the island’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, being recognised for both their outstanding biodiversity and cultural history. This is where the world famous Blue Mountain coffee is grown. Historically, the interior of these mountainous areas are where Jamaica’s first and only female National Hero, the Right Excellent Queen Nanny of the Maroons, strategically led the courageous Maroons to defend their freedom.

    The Long Bay Main Road is at sea level and runs adjacent to the shoreline but do not become mesmerised by the coastal views. Remain focused instead on the flat lands at the foothills on the right and look out for an open field. There is a sign high in the air suspended on poles that reads “Jamtopia Entertainment Restaurant and Lounge”. Turn right onto the dirt track and make your way to the wooden building.

    Entering the restaurant evokes a feeling of familiarity. It is reminiscent of sitting on a verandah chatting with family and friends before eating a meal. The friendly warmth of Christina Barford making you feel comfortable. Her role is multi-functional: greeter; bar tender; server; and teller. She efficiently executes her duties. In spite of a few items that I was interested in ordering from the menu not being available, she remained composed and patient. I placed my order and then chatted with a few other guests.

    Andre Wood was seated at the bar, eating his Honey Hot Wings with Fries and sipping a Dragon Stout whilst watching sports on television. He resides in Kingston and it was his first time visiting Jamtopia.

    He had described the service as being “very good” and would “definitely recommend” the restaurant.

    It was not long before my meal of Garlic Shrimp with Creamed Potatoes was served. The presentation was appealing and the aroma enticing. Portlanders certainly have a hand for seasoning. The shrimp was delicious. A point of note is that they were served in the shell (tail section) and so either peeling the shrimp prior to cooking or purchasing the already peeled shrimp could be given consideration. The serving of creamed potatoes was rich and velvety smooth, perfectly complementing the garlic shrimp. The combination had me wanting more!

    My dining companion, at a distance, was Roaul Thompson whom I had just met. Roaul and I conversed with ease and I learnt a bit more about the area that one can only learn from locals. Roaul is from Reach, Portland, and is familiar with the mountainous interior of the parish where he farms. It was his first time at Jamtopia. He had described the staff as being friendly and that he would recommend Jamtopia. He had been there all day and had enjoyed himself. He had matter of factly exclaimed that he “loves it here”.

    As I was leaving, people were arriving to watch a football match on the television mounted above the bar. Being at Jamtopia you have a sense of belonging, as though you are part of the community in Long Bay. So, visit Portland, a piece of “Heaven on Earth”!
