Jockey Richard Cole’s day in the sun
Richard Cole, like many other jockeys in the racing industry, has struggled to ride winners throughout his career. But every now and then, riders of this ilk pop up to have their day in the sun.
Cole’s day in the spotlight came on Sunday, October 8, 2023, when he steered Babylon Will Fall to victory in the second event, a maiden condition race for native-bred four-year-olds and upwards on the straight course. It was Cole’s first winner of the season after nine mounts, and his first in a long time.
Although Cole was unable to demonstrate his development in the saddle as Babylon Will Fall defeated competitors by a margin of 15 3/4 lengths, it was a good victory for the young rider who has been working behind the scene.
Babylon Will Fall raced to the front of the group after the break and stayed with runners for the first half of the race. When Cole encouraged her to race hard, the four-year-old chestnut filly drew ahead for an easy triumph, crossing the finish line in 1:01.2 (23.1 x 47.1).
English Anne (Natalie Berger) came in second, while You and I (Oshadane Robinson) came in third.
