PHILLIP PARCHMENT LANDS THREE-TIMER
Jockey Phillip Parchment booted home three winners on the day aboard Zion, Duke of Springs, and Diligent in their respective races.
Trained by Marlon Anderson, Zion (Nasheet – She’s A Charm) won the first race, a four-year-old and upwards (non-winners of two) contest at a mile (1,600m). The four-year-old bay colt shot to the front of the pack approaching the six-furlong (1,200m) marker, coming home by 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Traditional Boy (Dane Dawkins) and Another Champion (Anthony Thomas).
Disqualified winner on last, Duke of Springs made no mistake when landing a five-year-old and upwards (non-winners of two) going 6 1/2 furlongs (1,300m). Trained by Tensang Chung, Duke of Springs sat behind the early pace set by Three Card Guy (Andre Powell) before hitting the front turning for home, winning by 2 ¾ lengths in a time of 1:24.3. Comandante Lunar (Christopher Mamdeen) was second and My Smokey (Jordan Barrett) third.
Nine-year-old grey gelding Diligent produced a late run to win a three-year-old and upwards Optional Claiming ($400,000-$300,000) event at seven furlongs (1,400m). Diligent was three parts of a length ahead of Thunderstrike (Anthony Thomas) and Bruce Wayne (Roger Hewitt) in a final time of 1:30.4.
RARE WIN FOR CALVIN BAILEY
Little used jockey Calvin Bailey made the most of one of his rare live rides to win race three atop the Joseph Thomas-trained Pakman. Bailey and Pakman were successful in a three-year-old and upwards Optional Claiming spread ($250,000 – $200,000) travelling five furlongs round.
It wasn’t the best of starts for Pakman but the eight-year-old bay gelding surrounded horses going into the turn and that was that for the rest. Pakman won easily by seven lengths ahead of Buckaluck (Omar Walker) in a time of 1:02.3. Acapella (Aaron Chatrie) finished third.
Pakman was Bailey’s second win for the year from 20 starts.
TRAINER ARNOLD RAMBALLY JR SCORES WITH LOOSE BALL
Trainer Arnold Rambally Jr saddled his first winner this year with Loose Ball in a three-year-old and upwards Claiming ($1,000,000 – $800,000) call going 5 1/2 furlongs (1,100m).
Ridden by Roger Hewitt, Loose Ball was unable to go with the early pace racing among the backmarkers as Lightning McQueen (Paul Francis) blazed the trail. Danny Spud (Dane Dawkins) gave chase for most of the way with Casual Affair (Romario Spencer) and Acero (Hakeem Pottinger).
In deep stretch, Lightning McQueen kept up his work and when he looked like landing the event, Loose Ball came with a thunderous late run, sweeping by to win going away by 3 ½ lengths in a time of 1:07.3. Lightning McQueen was second and Cold Pursuit (Reyan Lewis) third.
DANE DAWKINS MAKES USE OF CHANCE RIDE
With Raddesh Roman picking up an injury, jockey Dane Dawkins got the leg up on the Patrick Lynch-trained Sheboom and drove the grey mare to victory in a five-year-old and upwards (non-winners of four) call over six furlongs (1,200m).
Sheboom left her starting stall in second place going in chase of Ajita (Tevin Foster) moving into the half-mile turn with Smoke Haze (Jordan Barrett) nearby.
Approaching the distance, Sheboom took over the lead and brought the field into the lane for the drive. Although Lord of Ajahlon (Shane Richardson) tried to challenge, Sheboom proved too strong, winning by 1 1/2 lengths. Gorgeous Gift (Roger Hewitt) finished third as the final time was recorded at 1:14.0.
SEVEN HORSES CLAIMED
In the third race, Dale Murphy claimed Pure Heart for himself from Raymond Townsend, Steven Todd claimed Buckaluck for owner David Pottinger from Ryan Darby, and Delroy Waugh claimed Pakman for 0wner Patrick Calder from Joseph Thomas. All horses in the third were claimed for $250,000 each.
Ryan Darby claimed Loose Ball for owner We’re Family from Arnold Rambally Jr for $1 million and Phillip Elliott claimed Danny Spud for owner Andre Elliott from Dennis Pryce also for $1 million from the fourth race.
In the sixth race, Errol Subratie claimed San Siro for himself for $400,000 from Joseph Thomas; and Everal Francis claimed Tradition for owner Texas Crew also for $400,000 from Donovan Plummer.
