829 JPs appointed during 2022/23
KINGSTON, Jamaica – A total of 829 Justices of the Peace (JPs) were commissioned in 11 parishes during the fiscal year 2022/23.
Justice Minister Delroy Chuck said the Ministry anticipates that another 900 JPs will be appointed islandwide during the current year.
He was speaking during his contribution to the 2023/24 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
Chuck also said amendments were made to the Justices of the Peace (Official Seals) Regulations.
He said this facilitated the introduction of a newly designed official seal for JPs, the composition of which sees the name of the parishes where they serve being replaced with the word ‘Jamaica’.
Chuck noted that this change means JPs are no longer restricted to serving only the parish where they reside or work.
The Ministry has also assigned an email address to every JP, who can now be contacted by members of the public at firstname.lastname@jp.gov.jm.
“I urge all the JPs across Jamaica to make yourselves available by really logging into the email address so that the people of Jamaica can get access to you,” Chuck said.
“Far too many JPs are just profiling. We need JP to mean something… that you are ensuring justice and that you are a peacemaker in your community,” he added.
Justices of the Peace continue to play an integral role in assisting with the administration of justice.
There are currently 10,252 JPs serving across Jamaica.
