Blake, ‘Bunny’ Shaw nominated for Concacaf Player of the Year awards
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Reggae Boyz captain and goalkeeper Andre Blake and prolific Reggae Girl Khadija “Bunny” Shaw have been nominated for the Concacaf 2022 Player of the Year awards.
In light of his nomination, Blake who represents Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer (MLS), said that he is elated to be listed for the award.
“Definetly a great feeling to be one of the nominees for Concacaf Player of the Year. It’s an amazing feeling to see all the hard work that you have put in over the years have not gone unnoticed. I’m very happy for that and hopefully, I can go all the way and get some votes and be the winner,” said Blake, who has 63 caps for Jamaica.
The 32-year-old Blake boasts four MLS all-star selections and two MLS Goalkeeper of the Year awards.
He was also the recipient of the 2022 John Wanamaker Athletic Award, which is presented annually since 1961 to the “athlete, team or organisation that has done the most to reflect credit upon Philadelphia and to the team or sport in which they excel.”
He joined the likes of NBA legends Wilt Chamberlain, Charles Barkley and Julius Erving, as well as boxing icon Joe Frazier in winning the prestigious award.
Meanwhile, Shaw carved her name in history by becoming Manchester City women’s highest scorer in a single season.
The Spanish Town native, who has netted 15 goals this season, nabbed the elite title after registering a brace against Brighton on March 12 that secured her 25th and 26th goals this season across competitions.
Concacaf has indicated that following the nomination process, it will continue its football first philosophy with a voting system that ensures players, coaches, media and fans determine the winners.
