Godfather of Harlem writer and co-creator Paul Eckstein has died aged 59.

Eckstein “unexpectedly passed peacefully in his sleep” on Tuesday in Jamaica, where he recently led a screenwriting workshop, according to a statement on his social media accounts.

Eckstein had over 40 years experience as a Hollywood screenwriter. As a film producer, he co-produced the MGM/UA film Hoodlum (1997); was the co-creator of Godfather of Harlem (2019), and prior to that led the writer’s room on the first year of the Netflix hit drama Narcos (2015).

He also wrote and produced the Disney/ABC biblical epic Of Kings and Prophets (2016) on location in South Africa. His other writing credits include Street Time (2002) (Showtime), Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2001) (NBC), and The Dead Zone (2002) (USA).

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of our brilliant colleague, Paul Eckstein, the co-creator and executive producer of ‘Godfather of Harlem’ and a beloved member of the MGM+ and ABC Signature families,” the companies said in its statement. “Working on the series was a labor of love for Paul who based the show in part on his family’s personal history. Paul was passionate, a creative force, known for his kindness, and generosity. He was a mentor and friend to many, and he will be dearly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and his longtime collaborator Chris Brancato.”

He recently co-lead a screenwriting workshop at Mico University College in Kingston from May 31 to June 1, 2023, which was organised by local film production company Strike Star Entertainment.

Ricky Lee, CEO and Founder of Strike Star Entertainment, remembered Eckstein as “a beautiful soul and a brilliant mind.”

“With a heavy heart we say farewell to a great Giant, a beautiful Soul and a brilliant Mind,” Lee said in a post on Instagram.

“Your memory and legacy will always be cherished and honored. Thank you for all the moments we have shared! You will forever remain alive in our hearts,” Lee added.
