ST ANN, Jamaica – A lifeguard was shot and killed while at a river in Exchange, St Ann on Sunday.

He has been identified as 27-year-old Tevin Simpson, otherwise called “Nunupuss” of Hand-to-Mouth Middle Street, Exchange in the parish.

According to a police source, Simpson was at a river in the area around 6:30 pm when gunmen shot him and then fled the scene.

The police were alerted and on their arrival, Simpson was seen lying face down with gunshot wounds to the head and neck.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A motive for the killing has not yet been ascertained.

Police have not confirmed if Simpson was employed to the river at which he was gunned down.

Ingrid Brown, a resident of the area, told the OBSERVER ONLINE that she is glad she opted not to visit the river that day.

“You have to know the voice of the Lord, because I had planned on going to the river after me come from church that day and is a good thing me listen to the spirit and stay inside. Me hear the shot them and me a say to me fren, ‘How that sound like rounda which part we did plan fi go so?’ And lo and behold a the same place,” she said.

She said the incident has dampened the community’s holiday spirit.

“Me feel a way still and the entire community feel a way right now cause we nuh used to them thing here a happen, especially in a holiday time. Everybody used to go river go cook food go enjoy we self and just have a good time. This nuh nice at all. We just a hope the police find out a who so it nuh happen again,” she added.

Simpson’s killing brings the parish’s overall murder tally to 50 since the start of the year.
