Mayor Williams to host inaugural Desmond McKenzie Wellness Day of Care for the homeless
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Mayor of Kingston Senator Delroy Williams is set to host the first Homeless Wellness Day of Care on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at the St William Grant Park.
Scheduled to be held under the theme, “Empowering our Most Vulnerable – Protecting the Homeless”, the ‘day of care’ is named in recognition of Minister McKenzie’s contribution over the years toward the care for the homeless population.
According to a release, the initiative will be a reminder of the efforts undergone by Minister McKenzie to help champion support services for some of the nation’s most vulnerable including a daily feeding programme and a hostel where the homeless can receive sanitary care along with shelters where they can access a clean bed to sleep in.
This initiative will continue the trend of providing vital care to this often neglected section of Kingston’s populace.
“The goal of this intervention is to provide needed care and attention to the vulnerable homeless population of Kingston and St Andrew. There will be participation by volunteer doctors, nurses, dentists and counsellors (psychiatrists & psychologists) among others,” the release stated.
Among the stakeholders are the Registrar General’s Department, Ministry of Health and Wellness, Ministry of Labour and Social Security, National Council for Senior Citizens and National Council for Drug Abuse among others.
“These services will provide a vital boost to the homeless in our City as we emerge from COVID-19 and build back stronger,” Mayor Williams noted.
