KINGSTON, Jamaica – The police say they still have not identified any suspect or established a definite motive in connection with last week’s killing of national Under-19 footballer, Omar Laing.

Laing, who attended St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS), was shot dead by a gunman on Charles Street in downtown Kingston.

Superintendent Beresford Williams, commanding officer for the Kingston Central Police Division, told OBSERVER ONLINE that a high-level probe continues into the killing.

“We have not identified any suspect, but our investigations are on in earnest,” Superintendent Williams said.

Laing’s killing shocked many people who believed he had a bright football future. He was killed on his 18th birthday.

Several possible motives for Laing’s killing have been bandied about on social media, the most popular being that he was killed because his attacker was unable to get to someone close to him.

Superintendent Williams said the police are looking at all angles. “We have not yet established a clear motive, so at this time we are looking at all the possibilities to include that theory,” he said.

Video footage showed Laing being chased and shot by a man while walking along the roadway. Laing was the leading goal scorer for STATHS last year in the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup competition.
