Thompson-Herah, Seville, Goule-Toppin shine at Swiss meet
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Two-time Olympic sprint-double champion Elaine Thompson-Herah continued her road to improvement after running her first sub-11.00 seconds this season to win the women’s 100m at the Gala dei Castelli-Bellinzona in Switzerland on Monday.
Thompson-Herah clocked 10.92 seconds (0.0m/s) to win the event, beating Great Britain’s Imani Lansiquot who ran 10.99 seconds while Gina Bass of Gambia was third in 11.12 seconds.
Jamaica’s Shashalee Forbes was sixth in 11.20 seconds but ran a season’s best 22.74 seconds (0.2m/s) for second in the women’s 200m that was won by American Tamara Clarke in 22.64 seconds with Italy’s Dalia Kaddari third with 22.86 seconds.
Thompson-Herah was one of three Jamaican winners on the day as Oblique Seville took the men’s 100m while Natoya Goule-Toppin won the women’s 800m.
Seville, who was fourth in the men’s 100m at the recent World Championships, ran 10.01 seconds (-0.1m/s) to beat Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala-10.04 seconds and Taymir Burnet of the Netherlands- 10.12 seconds.
Ryiem Forde, who was also part of the Jamaican men’s bronze medal-winning 4x100m team at the World Championships was ninth in 10.28 seconds.
Goule-Toppin ran a season’s best 1:57.53 seconds to set the meet record, beating Addison Wiley of the USA, who ran 1:57.64 seconds, and Audrey Werro of Switzerland who was third in 1:58.13 seconds.
Orlando Bennett was third in the 110m hurdles in 13.40 seconds (0.2m/s), losing to Switzerland’s Jason Joseph who ran 13.18 seconds with Senegal’s Louis Francois Mendy placing second in 13.29 seconds.
Fedrick Dacres placed third in the men’s discus throw with a best mark of 66.19m as Sweden’s World Champion Daniel Stahl won with 67.24m with Kristjan Ceh of Slovenia second with 67.15m.
