Three more teams book second-round spots in d’Cup

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Edwin Allen High, Mile Gully High and Belair High booked their tickets to the second round of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition after wins in their rescheduled games on Thursday.

Edwin Allen joined defending champions Clarendon College as the qualifiers from Zone H after beating Lennon High 2-0; Mile Gully advanced for the first time since the 2018 season when they were the best third placed team after drawing against Knox College, while Belair High made it back-to-back qualification to the second round, beating May Day High 2-0.

Nineteen teams have now qualified for the second round with most of the 32 spots expected to be filled by this weekend when the first round of matches are expected to end.

Jahleel Blackwood and team captain Kimolar Ferron scored to give Edwin Allen a 2-0 win over Lennon High in their first meeting of the season and improved to 18 points to secure second place.

Champions Clarendon College extended their winning run to seven games with a 4-1 win over Thompson Town and are 21 points at the top of Zone H.

Mile Gully High were held 2-2 by Knox College but extended their lead in Zone G as they improved to an unassailable 19 points.

The game was tied at 0-0 when it was suspended last week.

Belair High were also 2-0 winners over May Day High with goals from Christian Henry and Daniel Brown, to push their points tally to 24 to take the second spot behind Manchester High who were 1-0 winners over deCarteret College, taking their points tally to 27.

Results from Thursday’s games:

Mile Gully 2, Knox College 2

Porus High 0, Old Harbour High 6

DeCarteret College 0, Manchester High 1

Edwin Allen High 2, Lennon High 0

Thompson Town High 1, Clarendon College 4
