The fastest man of all time, the legendary Usain Bolt, has again taken steps to trademark the world-famous logo which shows his signature victory celebration pose.

Bolt first applied to register a similar trademark 12 years ago but it has since lapsed under United States law. According to a BBC business report, Bolt submitted a new application in the US on August 17.

The US Patent and Trademark Office confirmed that Bolt filed his application for the trademark last week.

The application notes that Bolt is known globally for the move in which he leans back and gestures to the sky – as he routinely struck the pose after winning gold medals and setting world records.

It said the logo depicts “The silhouette of a man in a distinctive pose, with one arm bent and pointing to the head, and the other arm raised and pointing upward”.

According to the filing, the eight-time Olympic gold medallist intends to use the image on items including clothing, jewellery and shoes, as well as restaurants and sports bars.

“Given that Bolt is now retired from racing, it makes sense that he would look to expand his business empire,” Josh Gerben, a Washington DC-based trademark lawyer, told the BBC.

“The silhouette of his victory pose is recognised around the world. This trademark registration would enable him to offer the items listed in the application himself, or licence the right to use the trademark to third parties,” Gerben said.

Apart from the eight Olympic gold medals, Bolt is a many-time world champion in 100m and 200m, where he holds the world records of 9.52 seconds and 19.19 seconds respectively.

He retired from athletics in 2017 and has since gone full force into several business ventures.
