Yeshie Renee drops the
Dancehall artiste Yeshie Renee is blowing up on local airwaves with her latest single, Boom, an infectious song with provocative lyrics celebrating her raw feminine power.
Released January 2023 on the UK-based CPO label, the single has gained traction on TikTok and Instagram in recent weeks, prompting Yeshie Renee to fly to Jamaica to capitalise on the buzz.
“The response has been so incredible, I have been hitting clubs, dances and live events to push the song and people have been responding to the song. I am planning to do a music video next week, and perhaps a remix with a reggaeton artiste,” said the artiste whose real name is Rennae Wright.
Since her arrival in Jamaica, she has been making the rounds, earning a major ovation at the Ocho Rios Kite Festival last week. Over the weekend, she performed at an event dubbed ‘Who Can Make the Dance Rock’ in Manchester.
“I love the way that the crowd has responded to my songs like Boom and Commotion, as a girl from Denham Town coming back to my homeland, it feels great,” she said.
Yeshie Renee’s raw humour might tempt people to sleep on her deeply schooled sensibilities, but she also has a conscious side as shown by one-drop songs such as ‘Give Thanks’. She hopes to release an EP that shows the full range of her creativity later this year.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica to a mother who is a poet and a father – now deceased – who was a Rastafarian chanter, she began exploring her creativity quite early, and as a 5-year-old, she participated in talent shows while winning awards alongside her older brother, reggae recording artist Majah Bless.
“I remember accompanying the late former Prime Minister Edward Seaga at events all over the island where I performed poetry pieces,” she said.
At the age of 12, Yeshie migrated to England where she completed her secondary education. She began to dabble in music in 2018 and the following year, Yeshie released her very first single “Ring Ring” in July 2019.
She shot her first ever music video for a conscious single, ‘Bring Back The Love’ in her community of Denham Town, Kingston. She continued to hone her craft, and after the release of the single “Commotion” in March 2022, Yeshie was discovered by Bobby Fortella of Flo1musiq Inc, who provided mentorship and executive production skills.
